Folk etymology

This sculpture on Antwerp's main square, showing a boy throwing a severed giant's hand, supposedly explains the city's (Flemish) name: Antwerpen = "Hand Werpen" = to throw a hand. Linguists call this "folk etymology": an accepted but false explanation of a word's origin. Compare the Walloon version, "Anvers": no hand connotations there.
